In a continued push to combat fraudulent and unwanted communications, the i3Forum’s Fight Fraud Workgroup has published a set of Know Your Customer / Know Your Traffic (KYC/KYT) recommendations designed to elevate fraud prevention efforts across the international telecommunications industry.
The newly released code of conduct builds upon foundational KYC work previously authored by Numeracle and the Cloud Communications Alliance (CCA). By integrating their insights with proposals from the i3Forum’s own working group, the recommendations represent a globally informed and collaboratively refined approach to customer and traffic verification
“This initiative reflects the collective expertise of the world’s leading voice and messaging fraud prevention professionals,” said Katia Gonzalez, Chair of the i3Forum Fight Fraud workgroup and i3Forum board member. “By aligning with evolving global regulatory expectations, our guidelines are designed to help carriers stay ahead of emerging fraud threats.”
KYC and KYT practices—long staples in banking and financial sectors—are rapidly gaining traction in telecom regulation. Countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and EU member states have already introduced mandatory KYC frameworks, with many Asian nations such as China, India, and Singapore, as well as Australia, following suit.
According to the i3Forum, the verification of customer legitimacy and the nature of their traffic is most effective when conducted at the point of origin. This makes originating service providers a first line of defense against fraud. However, international carriers are also called upon to perform due diligence by verifying the partners and traffic they transit.
The i3Forum’s KYC/KYT Guidelines enhance fraud prevention by strengthening customer verification and traffic vetting on international transit networks, extending KYC/KYT protection beyond the limited realm of domestic communications in creating a global solution.
The i3Forum encourages international carriers and stakeholders committed to the fight against telecom fraud to adopt its recommendations and consider joining the organization to further advance these efforts.
